Education & Empowerment

At NamaStay Himalayas, travel has always been about more than experiences — it’s about people. Since 2018, we’ve been working in Kanatal to support education and empower local families, especially women and children. What began as small acts of connection with our neighbors has grown into a community effort — nurturing confidence, skills, and opportunities that help people shape their own futures.

Why it matters
Life in the mountains is beautiful but not always easy. Work is seasonal, schools often lack resources, and opportunities are limited. But we’ve seen how even small changes — a notebook, a chance to learn, a space to be heard — can spark something bigger.

Our work is best reflected in the stories of those who inspire us.

Parvati Didi – We first met Parvati Didi in 2018, when we began reaching out to families in the village to encourage children to continue learning after school hours. At the time, she was caring for her four school-going daughters and asked us for support. With the help of friends and well-wishers, we raised funds for her family, and since then, Parvati Didi has been an integral part of our team — working with us from the very beginning.

Her story is also one of education and empowerment. Over the years, three of her daughters have completed school. Two of them are now employed in the city, building independent lives, while the youngest is studying in Class 10.

Parvati Didi’s journey reflects what we hope to create in Kanatal — opportunities for families to grow with dignity, for children to pursue education, and for women to find strength in community.

Devilal – When we started NamaStay Himalayas in 2017, the very first person we met was Devilal. He had already been caring for the land for 16 years, nurturing the orchard with quiet dedication. Since then, our journey with him has been one of mutual growth. While we’ve been able to create opportunities through the work we do, Devilal has shared his skills and knowledge of the land — from farming and orchards to woodwork and building.

Together, we’ve not only kept the land alive but also built a space where tradition, skill, and opportunity meet. His presence continues to shape the spirit of this place—rooted in patience, care, and quiet strength.

Sanju – Sanju first approached us in 2019, when he was just 15 years old, with a simple request—he wanted to learn how to play the guitar. That small spark of curiosity opened the door to something much bigger.

During the lockdown, Sanju came to live with us. While helping with daily housekeeping tasks, he continued his school education with our support. Over time, in the quiet rhythm of shared work and learning, he began to grow into new roles.

What started as small responsibilities gradually became something more. Today, Sanju is employed full-time, managing the day-to-day operations of the property. His skills have expanded far beyond what any of us expected—from preparing some of the best meals in the kitchen to navigating the world of stock trading.

Sanju’s journey is a reminder of how trust, time, and support can shape a path that’s both grounded and full of potential.

Kamla Didi – Kamla Didi is one of our neighbours—and Sanju’s mother. During the farming season, she works with us on the land, lending her experience and energy to help with daily tasks. Her presence is steady, kind, and deeply rooted in her signature childlike smile and an open heart.

Her story is simple, yet meaningful. It reflects how small gestures and seasonal connections can shape a sense of belonging, care, and community.

Prerna – Prerna’s vision was to connect with local women and create a space that inspires, empowers, and celebrates heritage. Drawing on her roots and education in textiles, she founded Grahwal Threads, a center dedicated to reviving traditional crafts. Through workshops for guests and meaningful employment opportunities for local women, Prerna is weaving together creativity, community, and empowerment.

Prerna’s work is closely connected with NamaStay Himalayas through collaboration, sharing a common goal of creating positive impact in mountain communities. This partnership has helped bring her vision to life, and we remains open to collaborating with more individuals and initiatives who share the commitment to sustainable development and empowerment in the Himalayas.

Shiva – Shiva was part of the first group of children who began studying with us in 2018. Naturally curious and eager to learn, he quickly picked up skills like spoken English and often guided guests on forest walks and hikes—sharing his love for the land with warmth and enthusiasm. Over the years, we supported his education, and he has now moved to the city with his family to pursue further studies.

His story is one of curiosity, connection, and quiet leadership—reminding us how a supportive community can help young people grow with confidence and purpose.

Manish – One of the earliest students to join us in 2018, Manish has grown alongside the work we do. As he grew, we supported his education, and he later spent a year working with us—learning to drive and engaging warmly with guests from around the world. He’s now working in the city, carving out a path for himself with quiet determination.

His story is one of steady growth and resilience—a reflection of how early support and real-world experiences can open doors to new opportunities.

Lucky and Ashu – The newest members of our community, Lucky and Ashu joined us last year at the ages of 10 and 5. Coming from nearby families, they now study and play with us regularly. Their curiosity and determination bring fresh energy and hope, reminding us why this journey matters so deeply.

Their story is one of new beginnings and bright potential—a heartfelt reflection of the future we are nurturing together.

How you can Get Involved
These stories are just a glimpse of the many more waiting to be empowered through education and community support. You can make a difference in two simple ways:

1. Volunteer

If you’re visiting Kanatal, spend a few hours with the local community. Read a story, teach a skill, share your craft, play a game, or simply listen — your presence and knowledge can leave a lasting impact.

2. Contribute Supplies

If you can’t volunteer in person, you can still support from afar. Sharing learning and creative materials — notebooks, pencils, storybooks, or art supplies — can spark creativity and confidence.
