ProSeed
ProSeed is a project in the Himalayas dedicated to restoring and rewilding farmland while promoting sustainable living through permaculture practices. The project works to bring degraded land back to life, grow diverse crops in harmony with nature, and create eco-friendly livelihoods that help people increase their income and build self-reliance. In time, it dreams of evolving into something more—a place of learning, where the wisdom of the land is shared and farming becomes both a livelihood and a way of life.
Why it matters
At 2,500 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, this land was once a thriving orchard. Over the years, road construction, deforestation, and changing weather eroded its soil and weakened farming.
ProSeed began in August 2021, in the midst of lockdown.
What was once abandoned is now being brought back to life—through the healing of the soil, the return of farming, and the creation of possibilities that keep people connected to the land. More than a project, it offers a way to rewrite the story of this place, turning loss into renewal and laying down roots that can grow strong again.
What We’ve Achieved (Since August 2021)
* Earth House Restoration – Rebuilt using natural and locally sourced materials to preserve traditional architecture and promote sustainability.
* Water Resource Excavation – Carried out to support both farming activities and daily water needs.
* Greenhouse Development – Established to enable sustainable, year-round food production.
* Biodegradable Toilet Installation – Installed eco-friendly sanitation systems to reduce environmental impact.
* Farm Pathway Construction – Created paved access paths across the farm for ease of movement and maintenance.
* Ridge Restoration – Reinforced ridges to prevent soil erosion and improve overall land stability.
* Fruit Tree Planting – Introduced a variety of fruit trees to enhance biodiversity and provide future harvests.
* Water Storage Tank Installation – Installed an 8,000-litre tank to improve water conservation and management.
What’s Next
The upcoming phase of ProSeed focuses on deepening sustainability, enhancing community engagement, and strengthening the farm’s ecological resilience. Planned initiatives include:
* Solar Power Installation – Providing clean, reliable energy to support daily operations and reduce dependency on external sources.
* Retaining Walls & Terraces – Constructing erosion-control structures to stabilize the landscape and expand arable farming areas.
* Accessibility Improvements – Enhancing infrastructure and pathways to ensure safe, inclusive access for community members and visitors.
* Water Keyways – Implementing systems to guide and conserve water effectively across the terrain.
* Protective Fencing – Installing secure boundaries to protect crops, infrastructure, and livestock from external threats.
* Planting & Guilding – Increasing biodiversity through ecological planting strategies, including companion planting and food forest guilds.
* Community Hall Construction – Creating a dedicated space for education, workshops, and communal gatherings to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
How You Can Help
Your support can directly strengthen ProSeed’s mission to restore the land, support sustainable farming, and empower the local community. There are two key ways to get involved:
